Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were made two union territories in 2019 when Article 370 and 35A were removed. In the first cabinet meeting of the government formed after the elections, the proposal to restore the status of the state was passed and sent to the Lieutenant Governor (LG). LG Manoj Sinha sent the proposal to the Home Ministry after approving it on October 19.
After becoming the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, CM Omar Abdullah went to Delhi and met PM Modi on 25 October. During this, he submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister, demanding the early restoration of the state status of the Union Territory. In the meeting that lasted more than 30 minutes, Abdullah discussed various issues related to Jammu and Kashmir with Prime Minister Modi, including the current security situation and development works. During this, Omar Abdullah also presented a traditional Kashmiri shawl to the Prime Minister. The meeting of the two was discussed a lot in the political corridors.
Statehood case also in Supreme Court
A petition demanding statehood for Jammu and Kashmir is also filed in the Supreme Court. On Thursday October24 ,2024 the Supreme Court agreed to hear the petition demanding full statehood status for Jammu and Kashmir UT within two months. Advocate Gopal Shankar Narayan has filed this petition on behalf of Zahoor Ahmed Bhat and Khurshid Ahmed Malik. CJI DY Chandrachud had said that he would hear it.
The first assembly elections in the state were held in September after the removal of Article 370. Let us tell you that after the removal of Article 370, the first assembly elections were held in the state last month (September). The results of the three-phase elections came on October 8. In this, the National Conference (NC) emerged as the largest party. The party got 42 seats. NC’s ally Congress won 6 and CPI (M) won one seat. While BJP became the second largest party with 29 seats.
