Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to take advantage of the online self-enumeration facility for the ongoing Census, saying accurate information about individuals and families is important for understanding the country and planning its future.
Speaking during the 138th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat on September 27, Modi said the first phase of the Census was nearing completion across states and Union Territories, with information relating to more than 32 crore families already recorded. Census work is continuing in remote and snow-covered areas of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand.
Digital Option Makes Participation Easier
Highlighting the digital self-enumeration facility, Modi said citizens can submit details about themselves and their families directly through their mobile phones. The service is available in 16 languages, including Hindi.
Citizens can log in to the Census self-enumeration portal using their mobile number, provide their location and family details and submit the information. According to the Prime Minister, the process takes around 15 to 20 minutes and does not require users to upload documents.
After submission, a special ID is generated that can be provided to the Census enumerator during a subsequent household visit. The information becomes part of the Census record after verification.
Modi said more than 2.6 crore people have already used their mobile phones to complete the self-enumeration process.
“Census is a national responsibility for all of us,” Modi said, adding that accurate information about citizens and their families helps create a clearer picture of the country’s future.
The Prime Minister had also appealed to citizens during his Independence Day address on August 15 to devote time to the Census exercise. In Sunday’s address, he reiterated the call for wider public participation as the nationwide enumeration progresses.
