Addressing the Indian diaspora in Melbourne, Prime Minister says India’s defence capability has earned global confidence; praises precision strikes against terror infrastructure

Melbourne: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday July 9, 2026 said that Operation Sindoor marked a defining moment in India’s fight against terrorism, demonstrating the country’s growing military capability and technological strength before the international community.

Addressing a packed Indian diaspora gathering at the ‘Melbourne Meets Modi’ event, attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Modi said India’s response to cross-border terrorism had sent a clear and unmistakable message that the country would no longer tolerate terror attacks against its citizens.

“The world has witnessed the capability and credibility of India’s defence platform through Operation Sindoor,” the Prime Minister said. “The explosions were at terrorist hideouts across the border, but their impact was felt around the world.”

The audience responded with prolonged applause as Modi asked whether they felt proud of India’s decisive action against terrorist camps.

A New Security Doctrine

Without directly naming Pakistan, the Prime Minister said India’s security approach has undergone a significant transformation in recent years. He asserted that the country’s armed forces now possess the confidence, technology and political backing to strike terror infrastructure whenever national security demands it.

His remarks reflected the government’s position that terrorism will be countered with firm and decisive action rather than restraint alone.

Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 in response to the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, in which 26 civilians lost their lives. Indian armed forces carried out coordinated precision strikes on multiple terror facilities located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

According to the Indian government, the operation targeted key terrorist infrastructure while avoiding civilian and military installations not connected with terror activities. The strikes were described as intelligence-driven and aimed at dismantling operational capabilities of terror organisations.

The military action led to several days of heightened tension between India and Pakistan before both sides agreed to halt military operations on May 10, easing the immediate crisis.

Diaspora Applauds India’s Growing Global Profile

Beyond security issues, Modi highlighted India’s rising global influence and called upon the Indian community in Australia to continue serving as ambassadors of India’s culture, innovation and democratic values.

He said the confidence displayed by Indians living abroad reflects the country’s growing economic strength, technological advancement and international standing.

The Prime Minister also underlined the deepening India-Australia strategic partnership, describing it as one built on shared democratic values, economic cooperation and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
