New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attended the National Day celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ Independence. He was the Guest of Honour at the event, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to receive this distinction.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), an Indian marching contingent comprising Navy and Army teams participated in the parade. An Indian Naval band also joined the marching unit, highlighting the close and special partnership between India and Seychelles. In a special gesture, INS Tarkash and INS Ikshak were docked at Port Victoria, symbolising India’s longstanding friendship with the island nation. PM Modi also conveyed India’s warm wishes to the people of Seychelles on the historic occasion.
During his state visit, Prime Minister Modi held official talks with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie. The leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and agreed to further strengthen cooperation in key sectors such as health, education, capacity building, digital transformation, sustainable development, social infrastructure, renewable energy, maritime security and defence.
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including challenges in the Indian Ocean region such as illegal fishing, drug trafficking and piracy. They expressed satisfaction over the progress of projects implemented under India’s Special Economic Package. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Seychelles’ development priorities and further deepening the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
