Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Terminal 2 of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on Saturday December 20, 2021 . Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, on Saturday. During the event, PM Modi also addressed a gathering in Guwahati, where he said that today is a celebration of development. He added that it is not just a celebration of Assam’s development, but of the entire Northeast region of India. PM Modi further appealed to everyone present to turn on the flashlights on their phones.
He said that the entire country is witnessing a celebration of development in Assam today. He stated that in the last few years, rapid progress has been made in the areas of infrastructure, connectivity, and facilities in the northeastern states. Prime Minister Modi said that the central government is continuously striving to connect the Northeast with the mainstream of the country’s development. He expressed confidence that in the coming years, Assam and the entire northeastern region will reach new heights of development.
PM Modi inspects the terminal
After the inauguration, PM Modi also inspected the new terminal. This new integrated Terminal 2 building has the capacity to handle approximately 13.1 million passengers annually. The construction of this terminal cost around ₹4,000 crore. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, and several other senior leaders and officials were present on the occasion.
Regarding the airport, officials stated that the total cost of the entire airport project is ₹5,000 crore. Of this, ₹1,000 crore has been specifically allocated for aircraft repair, maintenance, and overhaul (MRO) facilities. This will also create new employment opportunities in the future.
PM Modi honored after the inauguration of the new airport terminal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was felicitated after the inauguration of the new airport terminal building. On this occasion, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other senior leaders honored the Prime Minister. Several ministers, officials, and dignitaries from the state and central governments were present at the ceremony held after the inauguration program. The leaders described the new terminal building as a significant step for the development of Assam and the entire Northeast India.
Airport named after Assam’s first Chief Minister
The airport has been named after Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of Assam. Prime Minister Modi also unveiled an 80-foot-tall statue of him outside the airport. The new terminal is built over an area of approximately 140,000 square meters. Its design is inspired by Assam’s natural beauty, biodiversity, and cultural heritage, reflecting the state’s identity. Officials said that this airport will become a major aviation hub for Northeast India and will also serve as a gateway to Southeast Asia. This will give a significant boost to tourism, trade, and the development of the region.
