Prime Minister recalls the courage of freedom fighters and says Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India call infused new energy into India’s struggle against colonial rule

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, August 9, 2026, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and all those who participated in the historic Quit India Movement, recalling their courage and contribution to India’s struggle for independence.

In a post on X, Modi said the movement, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership, infused new energy into the freedom struggle and demonstrated the determination of Indians to break free from colonial rule.

The Prime Minister said the courage of those who participated in the movement would continue to inspire every Indian.

The Quit India Movement, also known as the Bharat Chhodo Andolan, was launched in August 1942 against British colonial rule. At the historic Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee, Mahatma Gandhi gave his famous “Do or Die” call, urging Indians to intensify the struggle for freedom.

The movement triggered widespread protests across the country, while the British administration responded with arrests and repression. Gandhi and several senior Congress leaders were detained soon after the movement was launched.

Despite the crackdown, the movement became an important phase of India’s freedom struggle, demonstrating the depth of public opposition to continued British rule.

The historic gathering took place at Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay, now Mumbai, which subsequently came to be known as August Kranti Maidan. August 9 is commemorated as August Kranti Day in remembrance of the movement and those who participated in it.
