Pritish Nandy passes away at 73

Indian poet, painter, film producer and former parliamentarian Pritish Nandy has passed away at 73 on Wednesday (January 8, 2025). Actor Anupam Kher condoled Nandy’s demise in a post on X, calling him a ‘fearless’ artist and a source of strength during his struggling years. 

Mr. Kher wrote in a heartfelt tribute, “Deeply deeply saddened and shocked to know about the demise of one of my dearest and closest friends #PritishNandy! Amazing poet, writer, filmmaker and a brave and unique editor/journalist! He was my support system and a great source of strength in my initial days in Mumbai. We shared lots of things in common. He was also one of the most fearless people I had come across. Always Larger than life. I learnt so many things from him. Off-late we didn’t meet often. But there was a time when we were inseparable! I will never forget when he surprised me by putting me on the cover of Filmfare and more importantly #TheIllustratedWeelky. He was the true definition of यारों का यार! I will miss you and our times together my friend. Rest well.”

A regarded magazine editor and literary voice, Pritish Nandy established his production banner, Pritish Nandy Communications, in the 1990s. He also hosted the DD show called The Pritish Nandy Show.

Nandy’s company produced several programmes for Doordarshan as well as mainstream fiction films. Some of their notable films include Sur – The Melody of Life (2002), Kaante (2002), Jhankaar Beats (2003), Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2003), Chameli (2004), Shabd (2005) and Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006) and . In the streaming era, the company brought popular shows like Four More Shots Please! and Modern Love: Mumbai, both streaming on Prime Video. 

Nandy was conferred the Padma Shri in 1977 for his contributions to Indian literature. He was conferred the Karamveer Puraskar in 2008.

Nandy is survived by his wife, Rina, and children Kushan, Ishita and Rangita.
