The festival of Dahi Handi falls on the next day of Krishna Janmashtami. The game of Dahi Handi is based on the childhood antics of Lord Krishna. In this festival, a clay pot of curd is hung up. Then a group of various Govindas try to break this pot of curd tied up very high .
The tradition of Dahi Handi has been being celebrated since the Dwapar Yuga (ERA). This festival reminds us of the childhood antics of Lord Krishna. Just as Lord Krishna used to break the clay pot filled with butter , so to steal butter in his childhood form from the clay pot and share it with his friends . In the same way, remembering the playful antics of his devotees Kanhaiya, they break the clay pot of butter ad curd curd and celebrate it grandly.
According to mythological beliefs, in Dwapar Yuga , Lord Krishna used to steal butter with his friends in his childhood and distribute it among his friends. That is why Kanha is also called Makhan Chor. Due to fear of butter being stolen, the gopis ( female devotees of Krishna ) used to hang the pot of butter at the highest place in the house. Even after this, Kanha used to break the pot and steal the butter.
