Washington: The United States has urged Americans to reconsider travel to and through the Middle East amid heightened regional tensions, warning that the security situation could escalate unexpectedly and disrupt flights and airspace across the region.

In its Worldwide Caution, the US Department of State advises Americans already in the Middle East to exercise heightened vigilance and remain prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and other travel disruptions. Americans outside the region have been advised to reconsider travel to or through the Middle East.

The warning comes amid renewed fighting involving Yemen’s Houthis and Saudi Arabia. On Saturday, the Houthis claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks on what they described as “sensitive” locations in Riyadh. Saudi-led forces said they intercepted a missile aimed at the capital and thwarted additional attacks. Flames and black smoke were also seen near Riyadh’s main airport, although the cause was not immediately established.

US Warns of Threats to American Interests

The State Department’s worldwide caution says US diplomatic facilities have previously been targeted and warns that Iran and groups supportive of Tehran could target US interests overseas or places associated with Americans, including businesses and other institutions.

Travellers have been advised to check directly with airlines before travelling, monitor US embassy and consular security alerts and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Separately, the State Department currently classifies Saudi Arabia at Level 3 — “Reconsider Travel”, citing armed conflict, terrorism and the risk of Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting American interests. The advisory also specifically notes threats from the Houthis in Yemen and places the Yemen border under a “Do Not Travel” warning.

The latest Houthi attacks have added to concerns over the widening regional confrontation and its impact on civilian aviation, energy infrastructure and major transport routes. Reuters reported that the attacks form part of a broader escalation in fighting involving the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
