Washington, September 21, 2026: The United States has renewed its warning to American citizens against travelling to Iran and urged those already in the country to leave immediately, citing a volatile regional security environment and the possibility of further escalation.
The latest security alert reiterates Washington’s existing Level 4 — Do Not Travel advisory for Iran, the highest category in the US State Department’s travel warning system. The official advisory says Americans should not travel to Iran for any reason and those currently there should leave.
The latest alert, dated September 19, warned that conditions across the region remain complex and could change rapidly. Americans were advised to remain prepared for flight cancellations, airspace closures and other disruptions that could affect their ability to travel.
“Do not travel to Iran for any reason. U.S. citizens should leave Iran now,” the US Virtual Embassy in Iran said in its warning.
Americans Asked to Prepare for Sudden Travel Disruptions
US citizens seeking to leave Iran have been advised to monitor airline and airport information and consider available departure options. Washington has also cautioned that procedures at Iranian land-border crossings, as well as entry requirements in neighbouring countries, may change with little notice.
The warning carries additional significance because the United States has no embassy or consulate in Iran. The State Department says the US government cannot provide routine or emergency consular services to its citizens inside the country.
The State Department’s standing Iran advisory identifies terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, arbitrary detention and wrongful detention among the risks facing American citizens. It also warns that Iranian authorities have detained US nationals without warning.
The department generally advises Americans in crisis situations to leave while safe commercial transportation remains available rather than waiting until normal departure options become restricted.
Warning Comes Amid Heightened Regional Tensions
The renewed Iran warning comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions across West Asia. The State Department has separately cautioned Americans in the region to remain vigilant and prepare for possible disruptions to flights and airspace as security conditions evolve.
The latest warning does not represent a new advisory level for Iran. The country was already classified at Level 4. Instead, the fresh alert reinforces the existing instruction to avoid travel and places additional emphasis on the possibility of rapidly changing transport and security conditions.
