New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday March 20, 2026 , congratulated Anutin Charnvirakul on his election as the Prime Minister of Thailand, expressing confidence in further strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Heartiest congratulations to Anutin Charnvirakul on his election as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. I look forward to working closely with him. Together, we will further deepen the multifaceted India-Thailand Strategic Partnership. Our ties are rooted in shared civilisational heritage, close cultural connect and vibrant people-to-people ties. India and Thailand remain united in our shared aspirations for peace, progress and prosperity for our peoples.”

Prime Minister Modi noted that India and Thailand share deep-rooted civilisational links, close cultural connections and strong people-to-people ties. He expressed his keenness to work closely with the new Thai leadership to advance cooperation across sectors and strengthen the India–Thailand Strategic Partnership.

Anutin Charnvirakul secured a decisive victory in Thailand’s parliamentary vote, winning the support of 293 out of 499 members, more than twice the votes secured by his closest rival. His election marks a rare moment of political continuity in Thailand, making him the first leader in two decades to secure a renewed mandate amid a history of political instability.

Leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, Anutin rose to prominence by capitalising on shifting political dynamics, including the decline of the once-dominant Pheu Thai party. His party emerged strongly in the recent elections, aided in part by a surge of nationalist sentiment following tensions with neighbouring Cambodia.

A seasoned political figure, Anutin has previously served as Deputy Prime Minister, Interior Minister and Health Minister, where he led Thailand’s COVID-19 response. Known for his pragmatic approach, he has played a key role in coalition politics and is often seen as a bridge between competing political groups.
