Raipur: Three urban centres in Chhattisgarh are set to get new green public spaces under Mission AMRUT 2.0, with the state approving ₹7.29 crore for development of modern parks in Ahiwara, Mungeli and Kanker.
The projects, approved under the guidance of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and the direction of Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Administration and Development Minister Arun Sao, are aimed at combining greenery with recreation, fitness and other civic amenities.
AMRUT 2.0 is already being implemented across Chhattisgarh’s urban local bodies; official Union government records have also documented central assistance for the state’s projects under the mission.
Sai said improving the quality of life in the state’s urban areas remained a priority.
“We are developing public spaces in cities where citizens can enjoy greenery and a clean environment, while children have places to play and young people and senior citizens have better facilities for exercise, walking and relaxation,” the Chief Minister said, according to the state government release.
He described the development of the three parks as another step towards creating more accessible and citizen-friendly urban spaces.
8,732 Plants, Open Gyms and Play Areas
The three parks will together have 8,732 plants, substantially expanding green cover within the project areas.
The plans include dedicated children’s play areas and equipment, open-air gyms, pathways for walking, seating and resting spaces, lighting, toilet blocks and gazebos.
Rainwater-harvesting systems are also proposed, bringing water conservation into the design of the public spaces.
The projects are targeted for completion within a year. Significantly, maintenance has been built into the implementation plan: after construction, the selected agency will be responsible for operating and maintaining the parks for five years.
Sai said rapidly developing cities need to balance infrastructure expansion with environmental considerations and citizens’ quality of life.
“These parks being developed through Mission AMRUT 2.0 will not merely be green spaces; they will be useful public places for children, young people, women and senior citizens,” he said.
The Chief Minister added that extensive plantation would strengthen the green character of the parks, while open gyms, pathways and recreational facilities could encourage healthier lifestyles. Rainwater harvesting, he said, would also contribute to environmental protection and water conservation.
Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao said the projects were part of the government’s efforts to make urban areas cleaner, greener and better equipped with civic amenities.
He emphasised that urban projects should not end with construction and said the five-year operation and maintenance provision was intended to ensure that the facilities and greenery created under the projects were properly maintained.
The initiative comes amid a wider push to accelerate AMRUT 2.0 works in Chhattisgarh. Earlier this month, Sai directed officials reviewing the Urban Administration and Development Department to speed up pending mission projects and ensure that sanctioned urban infrastructure translates into services for citizens.
