Raipur : The Central Government’s flagship PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has brought new light into the lives of households across the country. The initiative is not only relieving families from electricity bill expenses but also encouraging “environment-friendly and sustainable living”. Under the scheme, citizens receive Rs. 78,000 subsidy from the Centre and an additional Rs. 30,000 assistance from the Chhattisgarh Government, allowing them to install rooftop solar panels at nearly half the cost. The government has also ensured finance facility, allowing middle-income families to adopt rooftop solar systems comfortably.

In Kabirdham district, Devkumari Som of Shyam Nagar has installed a 3 kW rooftop solar system under the scheme. Her son, Devendra Som, shared that they applied online through the PM Surya Ghar portal and, after completing the required formalities, the solar unit was successfully installed on their rooftop.

Devendra said that within a month, the government transferred Rs. 78,000 subsidy directly into their bank account. The total cost of the 3 kW system was around Rs. 1.8 lakh. Earlier, the household consumed nearly 400 units of electricity every month. After the installation, the system has been generating 350 to 370 units monthly over the past 10 months. Their electricity bill now remains “in the negative” during winter, with surplus units adjusted for the summer months.

He added that the rooftop, which earlier remained unused, now generates clean electricity for the entire household. Solar power, produced without coal or water, is “pure, renewable and a boon for the environment”. Devendra said that he and his mother are nature enthusiasts and maintain a beautiful garden around their home, making the shift to solar a meaningful choice for their lifestyle.

The scheme, they believe, is lighting homes while preparing a “cleaner and safer tomorrow” for future generations. With a 25-year warranty on panels and no additional maintenance cost, solar installation has become a one-time investment with long-term benefits. Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, Devendra said the initiative is a “blessing for middle-class families,” enabling anyone to transform their home into a free-electricity household.
