Nitish Kumar expected to resign as Bihar CM on April 13

Ruling JD(U) MP from Jhanjharpur constituency said that it has almost become clear that the next Chief Minister of Bihar would be from BJP; Nitish Kumar took oath as a member of Rajya Sabha on April 10, marking an end to his two-decade stint in office and paving the way for a new CM. 

Ahead of power transition in Bihar, senior leaders of ruling JD(U) met Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at his official residence 1, Anne Marg in Patna on Saturday (April 11, 2026). The meeting which lasted for about two hours, mostly revolved around the formation of the next government in the State, said party sources.

Nitish Kumar has started shifting his belongings, mostly furniture, from his official CM residence to 7, Circular Road residence where he is expected to shift after resigning from his post.

Kumar is expected to resign as Bihar Chief Minister on April 13.

Ruling JD(U) MP from Jhanjharpur constituency said that it has almost become clear that the next Chief Minister of Bihar would be from BJP and Nishant Kumar, son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar along with another leader from JD(U) would be the Deputy CM. JD(U) will have two Deputy CMs, he clarified.

Meanwhile, president of Lok Janshakti Party ( Ram Vilas) Chirag Paswan told media persons that he was not in the race of becoming the Chief Minister of the State and “everything is happening as per maintained and defined”.

Nitish Kumar on Friday April 10, 2026 took oath as a member of Rajya Sabha, marking an end to his two-decade stint in office and paving the way for a new Chief Minister. The Janata Dal (United) chief resigned as a member of the State Legislative Council on March 30 after he was elected to Rajya Sabha.

Earlier we have reported that Nitish Kumar is expected to meet top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Delhi before returning to Patna either on April 11 or the next day. He is likely to address a meeting of NDA legislators on April 13 and hold what could be his last Cabinet meeting as Chief Minister. Following that, he may resign from his post.

Opposition grand alliance parties meeting
Meanwhile, the opposition grand alliance parties are meeting tomorrow April 12 to participate in a political event organised by members of Pan (Betel) caste community at Patna’s Bapu Sabhagar. The caste leader Indrajeet Prasad Gupta is MLA from Saharsha constituency on Indian Inclusive Party (IIP), which claims to represent the pan samaj (Betel caste society) .

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, too, is likely to participate in that meeting. Ahead of new government formation in the State such mahagathbandhan ( grand alliance) event and meeting of party leaders holds much political significance.
