From Traditional Heritage to a Modern Agricultural Revolution

For generations, the fields of Chhattisgarh have nurtured more than just crops—they have preserved a rich agricultural legacy. Among the state’s most valuable traditional grains are Kodo and Kutki, two resilient millets that once formed the staple diet of tribal and rural communities. Today, these humble grains are making a remarkable comeback, emerging as symbols of sustainable farming, nutritional security, and rural prosperity.

As climate change, water scarcity, and rising health concerns challenge conventional agriculture, Kodo and Kutki offer a practical and profitable alternative. Their ability to thrive in adverse conditions, combined with growing consumer demand for healthy foods, has transformed these traditional crops into modern “superfoods” with significant market potential.

One of the greatest strengths of Kodo and Kutki lies in their adaptability. These crops require minimal irrigation, low investment, and fewer agricultural inputs compared to many conventional cereals. They can be cultivated successfully on rocky, sloping, and less fertile lands where crops like paddy or wheat often struggle to perform. This makes them particularly suitable for small and marginal farmers who seek reliable yields with limited resources.

In an era where sustainable agriculture is becoming increasingly important, these hardy millets provide an ideal solution. Their resilience to drought and changing weather patterns enables farmers to reduce production risks while maintaining stable incomes.

The nutritional value of Kodo and Kutki is equally impressive. Kodo millet is rich in protein, carbohydrates, iron, and calcium, while Kutki contains high levels of dietary fiber, protein, phosphorus, and essential minerals. Nutrition experts recommend these grains as part of a balanced diet because they support better digestion and may help manage lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and anemia.

With growing awareness about healthy eating habits, consumers across India and abroad are embracing millet-based foods. This increasing demand has opened new opportunities for farmers and food entrepreneurs, making millet cultivation both a health initiative and a promising business venture.

Recognizing their immense potential, the Chhattisgarh government has intensified efforts to promote millet cultivation. For 2026, the Minimum Support Price (MSP) has been fixed at ₹3,200 per quintal for Kodo and ₹3,350 per quintal for Kutki, ensuring better returns for cultivators and encouraging more farmers to diversify their cropping patterns.

According to departmental data, during the Kharif season of 2025, Kodo was cultivated over 39.02 hectares, while Kutki covered 38.03 hectares across the state. Average productivity reached 550 kilograms per hectare for Kodo and 675 kilograms per hectare for Kutki, demonstrating the crops’ promising potential for higher production through improved farming practices and scientific interventions.

Beyond agriculture, Kodo and Kutki represent an opportunity to strengthen rural livelihoods and preserve Chhattisgarh’s cultural heritage. Their cultivation supports biodiversity, conserves water resources, and promotes environmentally responsible farming. Simultaneously, the expanding market for millet-based products—from flour and breakfast cereals to snacks and ready-to-eat foods—is creating new avenues for value addition, processing, and employment.

As India continues its journey towards sustainable development and nutritional security, Chhattisgarh is well positioned to become a leading millet-producing state. By embracing Kodo and Kutki cultivation, farmers are not merely reviving an age-old tradition—they are investing in a future that is healthier, more resilient, and economically rewarding.

Kodo and Kutki have travelled a remarkable path from being traditional village staples to earning global recognition as nutrient-rich superfoods. Their revival is proof that sometimes the best solutions for tomorrow’s challenges are rooted in the wisdom of the past. For the farmers of Chhattisgarh, these ancient grains are becoming the seeds of a prosperous and sustainable future.
