The Indian Embassy in the US described the terminology as “misleading and incorrect”
India has strongly objected to The New York Times for referring to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as “Pakistani Kashmir”, reiterating that the territory is an integral part of India.
The Indian Embassy in the US described the terminology as “misleading and incorrect.” In a post on X, it said, “There is no Pakistani Kashmir, only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.”
Reaffirming New Delhi’s long-standing position, the embassy said the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh “have been, are, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India.” It also accused Pakistan of illegally occupying parts of these territories and using violence against people living there.
India’s response came after The New York Times published a report on recent unrest and local elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The report said violence erupted in Mirpur after security forces clashed with members of the Joint Awami Action Committee, which was protesting alleged police excesses.
According to the report, at least two people were killed in the clashes. It also noted the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s call for an impartial investigation and said weeks of unrest had claimed multiple lives and disrupted the electoral process.
The report added that the Joint Awami Action Committee claimed several of its members were killed in police action, but said those claims could not be independently verified.
India has consistently maintained that the entire region of Jammu & Kashmir, including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, remains an inseparable and sovereign part of the country.
