US President says military action put on hold after being informed a framework for a Hormuz agreement is taking shape; Tehran yet to confirm breakthrough
Washington: In a significant development that could ease one of the most volatile geopolitical crises of the year, US President Donald Trump announced that he has temporarily suspended plans for fresh military strikes against Iran after being informed that diplomatic efforts are underway to secure an agreement aimed at reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The announcement comes after months of escalating military tensions between Washington and Tehran that have disrupted global oil supplies, rattled financial markets and heightened fears of a wider conflict across the Middle East.
Posting on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said he had agreed to halt the planned military operation after being told that negotiators were close to finalising the broad framework of an agreement.
“I have agreed to hold off any attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL. Get to work, everybody, and get it DONE,” Trump wrote.
According to the US President, the proposed understanding would include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures aimed at addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Hormuz at the Centre of Global Energy Security
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors, with a substantial share of global crude oil exports passing through the narrow waterway every day.
Its effective closure during the prolonged confrontation has severely disrupted international shipping, increased freight costs and pushed crude oil prices sharply higher.
Brent crude oil settled above 90 US dollars per barrel last week, compared with levels below 72 dollars at the beginning of July, reflecting growing concerns over energy supplies.
The uncertainty has also prompted major energy-importing nations to closely monitor developments in the Gulf region.
Iran Yet to Confirm Any Agreement
Despite President Trump’s optimistic remarks, there has been no official confirmation from the Iranian government that a comprehensive agreement has been reached.
Iranian state media also stopped short of acknowledging any imminent breakthrough.
Instead, Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency described Trump’s latest comments as another instance of Washington stepping back from its earlier military threats.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that Tehran remains fully prepared to defend itself against any military action.
“Iran is fully prepared to respond decisively to any adventurous actions by the US military,” he warned, adding that any regional cooperation against Iran would invite a response from the country’s armed forces.
Regional Diplomacy Intensifies
Diplomatic activity has accelerated across the Middle East as regional powers seek to prevent further escalation.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly urged restraint during discussions with President Trump, stressing the importance of dialogue and diplomatic engagement to restore regional stability.
Meanwhile, Israeli leaders are closely monitoring the evolving situation.
Israeli Cabinet Minister Zev Elkin said there appeared to be “some kind of vector toward an agreement between Iran and Oman”, referring to recent negotiations involving the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
However, he cautioned that it remains too early to conclude whether the negotiations would result in a lasting settlement.
“We’ll wait to see whether this develops into a full agreement and how it is eventually implemented,” Elkin said.
Conflict Continues to Cast Shadow
The latest diplomatic initiative follows nearly six months of intermittent hostilities between the United States and Iran.
A ceasefire brokered earlier this year collapsed after fresh missile attacks and retaliatory strikes reignited the conflict.
Washington has accused Tehran of launching ballistic missiles at a US military facility in Jordan earlier this week, an incident President Trump described as a surprise attack.
Meanwhile, Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen continue threatening commercial shipping in the Red Sea, adding further pressure on another crucial international trade route.
Security agencies have also warned of possible disruptions to regional air travel as tensions remain high.
Oil Markets Watching Every Move
Energy analysts believe that any agreement reopening the Strait of Hormuz would significantly ease pressure on global oil markets and improve supply chains.
In anticipation of possible improvements in supply, OPEC+ producers have already agreed in principle to a modest increase in production quotas beginning in September.
However, analysts caution that markets will remain volatile until there is concrete evidence that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has resumed without security threats.
For now, diplomacy appears to have temporarily replaced military confrontation, but the situation remains fluid, with both Washington and Tehran maintaining cautious positions while negotiations continue.
