Addressing over 2,000 students at IIMUN’s 15th anniversary in Mumbai, Bhagwat says questioning authority should not be mistaken for being anti-national

Mumbai: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday, August 6, 2026, described the concerns of Generation Z as genuine and said peaceful protest should be viewed as a legitimate democratic process rather than an act of confrontation.

Interacting with nearly 2,000 students belonging to Generation Z and Generation Alpha during the 15th anniversary celebrations of the Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC), Bhagwat stressed that democracy thrives through dialogue and consensus, not by suppressing differing opinions.

“I won’t say Gen Z should not protest. In a democracy, protest is one way of dialogue. If Gen Z is protesting, they are not anti-national. They are our own people and the next generation of this country,” Bhagwat said.

He said disagreement should not automatically be interpreted as hostility towards the nation and urged society to engage constructively with young people instead of dismissing their concerns.

Youth Want Reasoned Answers

Bhagwat observed that today’s generation is more informed, more connected and more willing to question established ideas than previous generations.

According to him, meaningful engagement with young people requires logical explanations rather than authority alone.

“Dialogue should ultimately lead to consensus. Young people expect answers that satisfy reason, and institutions must be prepared to engage with them sincerely,” he said.

He added that maintaining a sense of belonging is equally important while engaging with young citizens, saying they represent the country’s future and deserve to be heard with respect.

Remarks Come Amid Growing Youth Participation

Bhagwat’s comments come at a time when student-led campaigns and youth participation in public debates have become increasingly visible on issues ranging from education and employment to governance and public policy.

His remarks appeared to underline the need to distinguish democratic dissent from anti-national activity while encouraging constructive engagement between institutions and young citizens.

Background

Bhagwat’s observations in Mumbai build upon themes he has expressed in earlier public interactions, where he said today’s generation seeks logical explanations and meaningful dialogue. However, Thursday’s remarks were delivered during his interaction with students at the IIMUN event in Mumbai, focusing specifically on the role of protest and democratic participation.

My Insight

With youth emerging as an increasingly influential voice in public life, Bhagwat’s Mumbai interaction underscored the importance of listening before judging. While earlier speeches explored changing generational attitudes, Thursday’s message was centred on democratic dialogue, peaceful protest and the need to build consensus rather than deepen divisions.
