New Delhi: New Delhi is preparing to welcome world leaders for the 18th BRICS Summit, placing India once again at the centre of major global diplomatic engagement as the expanded grouping discusses economic cooperation, development priorities and the concerns of emerging economies.
Bharat Mandapam, the summit venue, has been illuminated and specially decorated for the occasion, reflecting the scale and significance of the international gathering. The venue, which hosted leaders during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023, is once again set to become a focal point of global diplomacy.
BRICS, which began with Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa at its core, has expanded significantly over the years and now represents a broader group of emerging markets and developing countries. The expansion has increased its economic and geopolitical weight and strengthened its potential as a platform for greater cooperation among countries of the Global South.
New Delhi Ready for High-Level Gathering
Authorities have made extensive arrangements across the national capital ahead of the summit. Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed, while security has been strengthened around Bharat Mandapam, diplomatic areas, major roads and locations connected with visiting delegations.
Barricades, checkpoints and regulated movement have been introduced in sensitive areas as part of the security plan for the visiting heads of state, heads of government and other senior representatives.
A public holiday has also been declared to facilitate the smooth conduct of the summit and reduce pressure on roads during the movement of international delegations. Government offices, educational institutions and several private establishments have remained closed under the special arrangements.
Such measures are not unfamiliar to the capital. Similar arrangements were successfully implemented when New Delhi hosted the G20 Summit in 2023, an event that showcased India’s organisational capacity and diplomatic reach before a worldwide audience.
