The Kerala Assembly had previously passed a proposal to officially change the state’s name to ‘Keralaam’. The state government and local residents argue that the state is called ‘Keralaam’ in the Malayalam language.

New Delhi : The Cabinet has approved the proposal to change Kerala’s name to “Keralaam.” This is being considered a major step ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Kerala. It is being said that this will strengthen the state’s cultural and linguistic identity.

Earlier, the Kerala Legislative Assembly had officially passed a resolution to change the state’s name to “Keralaam.” The state government and local residents argue that the state is called “Kerala” in Malayalam, and therefore, this name should be used in official documents and the Constitution.

Now, taking action on this issue, the Central Government has approved the proposal to change the name. This decision will pave the way for bringing the state’s identity closer to its original language.

It should be noted that the demand for a name change for Kerala is not new, but the decision to change the state’s name just before the Assembly elections has sparked a new debate in political circles and is being linked to the upcoming elections. On the other hand, approving such a major change just before the elections is being considered an important strategic move by the Central Government.
