Jagdeep Dhankhar, who has been serving as the 14th Vice President of India since August 2022, resigned from the post on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. His term was to end on August 10, 2027. He officially stepped down citing health reasons, but differences with the central government are believed to be the reason for his resignation.

After the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the post of Vice President of the country is vacant and elections for it are to be held on September 9, 2025 . Notification will be issued on August 7, 2025 regarding the Vice President election. In reference to this , senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor said that the next Vice President of the country will be the one nominated by the ruling party..

Will Shashi Tharoor, who led all-party delegation on “Operation Sindoor” to America be nominated as Vice President as a reward while remaining in Congress! Like Shashi Tharoor opposing Rahul Gandhi’s statements in Lok Sabha and keeping mum on many matters is a sign of quitting Congress to be the National Vice President, Shashi Tharoor knows better .

‘The government will also consult the opposition’

When Shashi Tharoor was recently asked by scribes about the next Vice President, he said, ‘We only know that the next Vice President will be the one nominated by the ruling party, because the composition of the electoral college is already decided. We hope that this time the opposition will also be consulted, but who can tell this. This statement of Tharoor have an in-depth conviction . But as he says who can tell this , same way Shashi Throor is waiting for an invitation surely .

However Shashi Tharoor said that he does not know who will be the next Vice President, but he is sure that he will be the candidate of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned from the post of Vice President on July 21, while his term was till 2027.

Tharoor said, ‘This is an election for both the houses of Parliament. Unlike the presidential election, where state assemblies also vote. Only Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are to elect Vice President. So we already know about the majority. I think it is absolutely clear that the next Vice President will be the person nominated by the ruling party.’ Tharoor expressed hope that the central government will consult the opposition for the nomination of the next vice president.

The Election Commission has fixed September 9 as the date for the vice president election and the notification will be issued on August 7 right after 4 days . The last date for filing nomination papers will be August 21. The election results will be declared on September 9, the day of voting.

Know what are the equations?

The Vice President of the country is elected by an electoral college, which includes elected members of the Lok Sabha, besides elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha. The number of both the houses is 782 and if all eligible voters exercise their franchise, the candidate for the post of Vice President will need 391 votes to win.

The NDA has the support of 293 out of 542 members in the Lok Sabha and 129 out of 240 members in the Rajya Sabha. The ruling coalition has the support of a total of 422 members. In such a situation, the ruling party will not face any difficulty in getting its candidate elected as Vice President.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, who has been serving as the 14th Vice President of India since August 2022, resigned on July 21,2025 the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

His term was to end on August 10, 2027. He officially resigned citing health reasons, but his differences with the central government are believed to be the reason for this. This tension increased when Dhankhar refused to agree with the government’s stand on the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Verma.
