Chhattisgarh is investing ₹3,500 cr in biofuel production

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority organised the Biofuel and Bioenergy Expo in Raipur, the capital, from friday November 7 to 9, 2025 at the local Shriram Business Park.

Discussing Chhattisgarh’s biofuel roadmap, Sumit Sarkar, CEO of the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA) said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, initiatives are underway to make Chhattisgarh a leading state in the field of biofuels.

CEO ( Chief Executive Officer ) Sumit Sarkar noted that private companies in Chhattisgarh are investing approximately ₹3,500 crore, in accordance with the Chhattisgarh Industrial Policy 2024-2030. OGMCs like GAIL and BPCL have initiated the process of setting up eight MSW/biomass-based compressed biogas plants in various ULBs. ONGC Green and HPCL Green are currently surveying various locations to set up CBDG production units.

Feedstock-based trials are being conducted in the state to produce bioethanol and compressed biogas using rice, maize, and chickpea residues. Enzyme production trials and culturing of new microbial strains using agricultural waste as a substrate are also underway.

He informed that in the area of ​​bio-aviation fuel, CBDA is now preparing to produce biomass-based hydrogen, which will subsequently be used for SAF production through hydroprocessed ester and fatty acid technology.

Chhattisgarh has already developed a standard operating procedure for bioethanol production using surplus rice as the primary feedstock.

Recently, in collaboration with the National Sugar Institute (NSI), Kanpur, trials have been initiated on sugar beet cultivation to establish an alternative feedstock at the CBDA Biofuel Complex site, Village Godhi, District Durg.

The next step is to test its potential for ethanol production, which will help achieve India’s 20 percent blending target and beyond, ensuring the continued success of this initiative.

At the seminar, GAIL’s CGM Mohammad Najeeb Qureshi, and DGM, Jitendra Pandey shared information about the city gas distribution pipeline network in Chhattisgarh. BPCL’s DGM, Sanjay Thakur gave a presentation on the potential of compressed biogas in Chhattisgarh. Similarly, Reliance Industries’ DGM, Sushil Verma, provided information on compressed biogas production from paddy.

Dr. Vanita Prasad, Founder Director of REVY Environmental Solutions Pvt. Ltd. gave a presentation on the operation of the biogas plant, and Atrium Innovations Pvt. Ltd. Rajesh Date, Director, Pune, explained about anaerobic composting system, Sukant Kumar Meher, Managing Director, Ingrotech Aqua Engineers Pvt. Ltd., Sambalpur, explained about the possibilities of producing compressed biogas from STP plant and Jitendra Narayan, CEO, AEC Agritech Pvt. Ltd. explained about compressed biogas policy, procurement and pricing.
