Detailed discussion on ‘Just Transition’ in coal fields, emphasis on concrete steps to expand renewable energy in the state
Raipur: Researchers from the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and Swaniti Initiative paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai at the Chief Minister’s residence in Raipur. During the visit, the Chief Minister released their detailed study report, “Mapping India’s State-Level Energy Transition: Chhattisgarh.”
Chief Minister Sai discussed in detail with the researchers the Chhattisgarh government’s strategies for the expansion of renewable energy, its security, and sustainable development in the state.
CM Sai said that the government is continuously striving to promote innovations related to solar energy, green hydrogen, and energy efficiency in the state.
Researchers presented Chief Minister Sai with a comprehensive index of “Energy Transition Vulnerability” for 52 coal-producing districts in India, highlighting the need for a “just transition”—that is, an economically, socially, and environmentally just transition—in traditional coal-based areas.
The researchers explained that this index is an important indicator of future challenges, employment structure, and alternative livelihood opportunities in old coalfields.
Present on the occasion were Subodh Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, and Rohit Yadav, Secretary, Energy Department.
