China got annoyed when PM Modi congratulated Dalai Lama on his birthday… Dragon also got irritated with India’s stand on Tibet

On Sunday July 6, 2025 , it was birthday of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama which was celebrated with great pomp in India. PM Modi also congratulated Dalai Lama on his birthday, after which China has raised objection.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, who is living in exile in India, on his 90th birthday, which angered China and it has expressed its objection to India regarding this. On Monday July 7, 2025 , Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said that China has protested on this issue.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday July 7 , 2025 afternoon, “India should fully understand the sensitivity of issues related to Tibet, recognize its separatist nature, respect its commitments to China on Tibet-related issues and act prudently. India should refrain from using these issues to interfere in China’s internal affairs.”

She said that China has lodged a protest with India over this.

On Sunday July 6,2025 , on the birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, PM Modi posted on social media, ‘I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending my heartfelt best wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday. He has been an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline.’ Along with this, PM Modi prayed for his healthy life.

China is infuriated by PM Modi’s simple congratulatory message. The spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry further said on PM Modi’s congratulatory message, ‘The 14th Dalai Lama is a political exile who has long been involved in anti-China separatist activities and has tried to separate Tibet from China under the guise of religion.’

This is the second time in a week that China has criticized India over official comments on the Dalai Lama.

China was also infuriated by Kiren Rijiju’s statement

Last week on Thursday, India’s Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had said that only the Dalai Lama and the trust established by him have the right to choose his successor as the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

On his statement, Mao said on Friday that India should ‘refrain from obstructing the improvement of China-India relations.’

The Dalai Lama has been living in India since 1959. He fled to India after a failed armed rebellion against China. On Wednesday, he said only the Gaden Phodrang Trust can confirm his successor. He had earlier said his successor would be born in the free world, outside China.

China has rejected the Dalai Lama’s claims and said the Dalai Lama’s successor will be chosen in accordance with tradition and Chinese law and will have China’s support.
