The World Health Organization says that there has been a slight change in the trend of corona variants since the beginning of 2025. The LP.8.1 variant is decreasing. While NB.1.8.1 has been placed in the category of Variant Under Monitoring, its cases are increasing rapidly. By mid-May 2025, this variant has become 10.7% of the total genomic sequences reported worldwide.

Seasonal pattern not clear

According to WHO, the current infection levels reflect the same situation as at this time last year, WHO also said that till now there is no clear seasonal pattern in the spread of COVID-19. Apart from this, the surveillance system is still limited in many countries, which is a matter of concern.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern about the resurgence of the Covid-19 virus. According to the WHO, an increase in the activity of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is being recorded worldwide since mid-February 2025. According to WHO data, the positivity rate in Covid tests has reached 11%, which is the highest since July 2024.

Apart from this, the monitoring system is still limited in many countries, which is a matter of concern.

WHO recommendations

WHO has urged all member countries to manage COVID according to risk-based and integrated strategy. Follow the recommendations of WHO Director General. Do not stop the vaccination program, continue it. Especially people at high risk should be vaccinated. Vaccine is the most effective way to prevent serious illness and death.
