West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the second time. She has demanded a central law and stringent punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder after rape. She has also called for mandatory provisions to ensure timely disposal of cases by trial courts and expressed concern over the lack of response to her previous letter.
Mamata Banerjee has written in her letter that you will remember my letter No. 44-CM dated August 22, 2024 (copy enclosed), which spoke about the need to make a stringent central law on incidents of rape and give the harshest punishment to the culprits of such crimes. There was no response from your side on such a sensitive issue. She further said that however, a reply has come from the Minister of Women and Child Development, which does not properly reflect the seriousness of the issue raised in the letter. I believe that the seriousness of the subject and its relevance to the society has not been appreciated enough while sending this general reply. Not only this, I would also like to mention some of the steps already taken by our state government in this area, which have been ignored in the reply.
Mamata made this demand
The Chief Minister of West Bengal said that I would like to reiterate and request to consider stringent central law and stringent punishment on heinous crimes like rape/rape and murder. It should have mandatory provision for disposal of cases within a specific time-frame by the trial court. I hope this matter will draw your attention in the larger interest of our society
