Indian-origin Anita Anand out of the race for Canada’s PM post.
Anita Anand has announced that she will not contest the next election in the country as an MP from Oakville, Ontario. In her statement, she thanked the outgoing Canadian Prime Minister for welcoming her into the Liberal team as a member of Parliament and giving her important cabinet portfolios.
Anita Anand of Indian origin has dropped out of the race to become the Prime Minister of Canada. She has said in a statement that she will not contest the next elections in the country as an MP from Oakville, Ontario. Her statement came a few days after Trudeau offered to resign from the post of Prime Minister. Anita was being seen as a replacement for Justin Trudeau. However, now after her announcement, she is out of this race. Before her, two other leaders involved in this race had withdrawn their names.
Anita Anand announced her decision on Tuesday, confirming that she will not seek re-election as an MP from Oakville, Ontario. In her statement, she thanked the outgoing Canadian Prime Minister for welcoming her into the Liberal team as a member of Parliament and giving her important cabinet portfolios. She also thanked the people of Oakville for electing her to the House of Commons of Canada.

In her statement, she said, “I heartily thank Prime Minister Trudeau for welcoming me into the Liberal team as a Member of Parliament and entrusting me with a key cabinet portfolio. I am grateful to the people of Oakville for electing me to represent them in the House of Commons of Canada. They are wonderful people, where my husband and I raised our four children over the past 20 years.”
In her statement, Anand also highlighted that she will continue to play her role as an MP until the next election. She said, “I will continue to honorably perform my roles as a public office holder until the next election.”
Also made President of Treasury Board
Born to a Tamil father and Punjabi mother, 57-year-old Anand has held several ministries in Trudeau’s cabinet. Since she was inducted into Trudeau’s cabinet, Anand has handled key ministries such as public service and procurement and defense. She was also made President of the Treasury Board in 2024.
Before entering politics in 2019, Anand practiced law and taught at universities. She was a visiting lecturer at Yale University and a professor of law at the University of Toronto.
Thanked the people of Oakville
Talking about her roots, Anand said that many people had ignored her by saying that a person of Indian origin cannot win Oakville. She said, “Yet Oakville has made me win not once but twice since 2019, which is an honor that I will always keep in my heart.
Let us tell you that both Anita Anand’s parents were doctors and had settled in Canada. While her grandfather was a freedom fighter from Tamil Nadu.
These leaders are in the race for the post of PM
After Trudeau’s offer to resign from the post of PM, the names of four leaders Chrystia Freeland, Dominique LeBlanc, Mark Joseph and Melanie Jolie came to the fore. But later the name of Anita Anand of Indian origin was also in the headlines. But out of these five leaders, Melanie Jolie, Dominique LeBlanc and Anita Anand have distanced themselves from the PM post claim.
