‘Iran is our old friend, India’s silence is worrying…’ Sonia Gandhi targets Modi government over the war in the Middle East

Sonia Gandhi criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying that his government has a long history of undermining peace and promoting extremism. She also described US President Donald Trump’s statement on June 17 as “disappointing”.

Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi has described the silence of the Indian Government on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a ‘deviation from moral and diplomatic values’. She has written an article in the newspaper The Hindu titled – “It is not too late to make India’s voice heard.”

Sonia Gandhi alleged that the government led by Prime Minister Modi has not only lost its voice but also abandoned the values by retreating from India’s permanent and principled Palestine policy.

India’s silence was termed worrying

She wrote: “New Delhi’s silence on the devastation in Gaza and now the unprovoked attacks on Iran is worrying. It is not just silence, but an abdication of our moral traditions.” Sonia Gandhi stressed, “It is not too late yet. India must speak out, act responsibly and use every diplomatic channel available to reduce tensions and promote a return to dialogue in West Asia.”

Sonia Gandhi said that the illegal and unconstitutional attack on Iran by Israel on 13 June 2025 once again showed how dangerous unilateral military action can be. The Congress party has strongly condemned these bombings and targeted killings.

She also said that Iran has been an old and trusted friend of India. The Congress leader recalled that in 1994 Iran had helped in blocking an anti-India resolution on Kashmir in the United Nations Human Rights Commission. She said that Iran has been an old friend of India and there have been deep civilisational ties between the two countries.

Targeting Netanyahu

Sonia Gandhi also targeted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and called him a ‘leadership that undermines peace and promotes extremism’. She also criticized the statement of US President Donald Trump in which he rejected the report of his own intelligence agencies and said that Iran is close to nuclear weapons.

In the end, Sonia Gandhi appealed that “It is not too late yet, India will have to speak out, behave responsibly and promote the resumption of dialogue in West Asia by using every diplomatic medium
