Two-Hour Meeting Signals Reconciliation Effort; Baghel Warns Against Indiscipline, Says Rahul Gandhi Will Lead 2027 Campaign
Chandigarh: The Congress leadership has stepped up efforts to end months of factional infighting in Punjab, with Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel holding a crucial two-hour meeting on Saturday with the camp led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. The high-stakes discussions are being viewed as a significant attempt to restore unity ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The meeting took place at the residence of MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh after days of political uncertainty. Besides Channi and Baghel, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa were among the senior leaders who participated in the deliberations.
High Command Unwilling to Reconsider Leadership Decision
The Channi faction has been demanding a review of the Congress High Command’s decision to appoint Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the Punjab Congress president. However, Bhupesh Baghel made it clear that the party leadership’s decision remains final.
“The High Command’s decision will not be changed under any circumstances,” Baghel reportedly told party leaders, signalling that while dialogue is welcome, there will be no compromise on organisational appointments.
Meeting After Days of Deadlock
Baghel has been camping in Chandigarh for the past five days, holding consultations with senior Congress leaders to bridge differences within the state unit. While several leaders met him earlier in the week, the Channi camp had initially stayed away.
A meeting scheduled for Friday was postponed after Channi and his supporters spent the day discussing their strategy. Eventually, the leaders agreed to meet Baghel on Saturday following continued persuasion and the High Command’s insistence on party unity.
Notably, the Channi faction had reportedly sought that Raja Warring should not be part of the discussions, a condition that was accepted for this round of talks.
Signs of a Possible Truce
Following the meeting, both Bhupesh Baghel and Raja Warring described the discussions as constructive. Political observers believe the dialogue could help reduce tensions that have divided the Punjab Congress over the past several months.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Baghel said that all Congress leaders would soon be seen united on one platform as the party shifts its focus towards strengthening its organisation before the Assembly elections.
Strong Warning Against Indiscipline
Baghel also issued a stern warning to party leaders, stating that disciplinary violations would not be tolerated.
He announced that he would remain stationed in Punjab for an extended period to oversee organisational work and coordinate election preparations.
“The party will take strict action against anyone indulging in indiscipline. Those working against the organisation will be shown the door,” he said.
Baghel further reaffirmed that Rahul Gandhi will be the face of the Congress campaign in the Punjab Assembly elections and is expected to devote significant time to the state during the campaign.
Message of Unity
According to leaders present at the meeting, the discussions focused on strengthening the organisation, addressing concerns raised by party workers, and ensuring that internal differences do not weaken the Congress ahead of crucial political battles.
The meeting was seen as an effort to convey the concerns of grassroots workers to the party leadership while reaffirming the need for collective action.
While ideological and leadership differences may not have disappeared completely, Saturday’s dialogue has raised hopes that the Punjab Congress could move towards greater cohesion after months of public infighting.
