Film director Shyam Benegal has passed away. He was said to be ill for a long time.
Famous filmmaker and director Shyam Benegal died on Monday December 23 , 2024 at 6.38 pm. He was 90 years old. A close source associated with Benegal told Amar channel24india.com that he had fallen at his home two days ago after which he was admitted to the hospital. Shyam Benegal was also reportedly suffering from kidney problems. He was in coma for two days and breathed his last during treatment on Monday evening.
Daughter gave information
Shyam Benegal’s daughter Pia said that her father and filmmaker Shyam Benegal died at the age of 90 in Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital due to chronic kidney disease. He died at 6.38 pm in Wockhardt Hospital Mumbai Central. He was suffering from chronic kidney disease for many years, but it had worsened. This is the cause of his death. ‘Wockhardt Hospital sources said that Benegal has been admitted to the ICU.

Shyam Benegal was known for films like Ankur, Mandi, Manthan etc., most of which were released in the mid-70s or 80s. Shyam Benegal was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991 by the Government of India. His successful films include Manthan, Zubeida and Sardari Begum. In his illustrious career, Shyam Benegal made films on various issues, documentaries and television serials, including ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ and ‘Samvidhan’.
This is how Shyam made his first film
Shyam Benegal was born on December 14, 1934 in Hyderabad. He belonged to a Konkani-speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family. His father Sridhar B. Benegal was originally from Karnataka. He was a photographer who showed Shyam an early interest in filmmaking. At the age of just 12, Shyam made his first film using a camera gifted by his father. He did his master’s degree in economics from Osmania University, Hyderabad, where he founded the Hyderabad Film Society, which was the beginning of his glorious journey in cinema.
Recently celebrated his 90th birthday
Earlier on December 14,2024 he celebrated his 90th birthday with his friends and family. Actors Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Divya Dutta, Shabana Azmi, Rajit Kapoor, Atul Tiwari, filmmaker-actor and Shashi Kapoor’s son Kunal Kapoor and others were a part of this grand celebration.
