Supreme Court on Freedom of Speech and Expression: The Supreme Court has made an important comment on freedom of expression. The apex court made it clear through its comment that freedom of expression is the backbone of our democratic system, but its misuse can give rise to hatred and disintegration in the society. Therefore, citizens should speak responsibly, maintain restraint and respect the feelings of others.

The Supreme Court on Monday July 14, 2025n made an important comment on freedom of expression and said that citizens should understand the value of their freedom of speech and expression and along with this, they should follow self-control and restraint. The court said that the increasing divisive tendencies on social media should be stopped. The court also clarified that it is not talking about censorship, but wants people to take responsibility on their own and exercise restraint in their words.

There is no need to bring the state into the picture – Supreme Court
The Supreme Court said, ‘Nobody wants the state (government) to interfere in such matters. Therefore, it is important that people take responsibility themselves and do not say anything on social media or other forums that spreads tension in the society.’

Supreme Court emphasized on brotherhood and unity
The apex court also emphasized the need to maintain the spirit of brotherhood among citizens and said that in today’s time when separatist ideas are spreading rapidly, citizens should speak thoughtfully. During the hearing, the court said, ‘We are not against freedom of expression, but there are already reasonable limits on it in the Constitution and people should follow these limits.’

What is the whole matter?
The Supreme Court made this comment during the hearing of a case in which concerns were raised about objectionable and provocative posts on social media. The court is considering whether a code of conduct can be made so that a balance is maintained between freedom of expression online and harmony in society.
