The Supreme Court has written a letter to the Central Government demanding immediate vacating of the government bungalow of former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud after he stayed longer than the stipulated time. Chandrachud has called it a family compulsion. He said that there was a delay in getting a new house due to the special needs of his daughters. The Supreme Court says that no more time can be given.

New Delhi: Former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s prolonged stay in the government bungalow has now become a matter of controversy. The Supreme Court administration has written a letter to the Central Government urging that the bungalow at 5, Krishna Menon Marg be vacated immediately. This bungalow is the official residence of the Chief Justice of the country. Chandrachud retired in November 2024, but is still living there.

The Supreme Court has written a letter to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on July 1, saying that former Chief Justice of the country Chandrachud is staying in the bungalow for more days than the stipulated time. According to the rules, after retirement, the former Chief Justice can stay in a type-seven bungalow for six months. But Chandrachud has been living in a type-eight bungalow for eight months, which is a violation of the rules.

What did Chandrachud say on this issue

On this issue, Chandrachud said that this delay was due to his family reasons. He told that his two daughters need special care and it was not easy to find a suitable house for them. The government has given him another house on rent, which is under repair. He will shift as soon as the repair is completed.

These two Chief Justices did not take the bungalow

Interestingly, after Chandrachud’s retirement, two Chief Justices Justice Sanjeev Khanna and current Chief Justice BR Gavai refused to take the bungalow located at Krishna Menon Marg. Both preferred to stay in their old residence. This is why it became easy for Chandrachud to get additional time in the bungalow.

The Supreme Court administration had given limited time

Chandrachud was already allowed by the Supreme Court to keep the bungalow till April 2025. Later, he also got a verbal extension till May 2025. But now that time has also passed. The Supreme Court has made it clear that no more waiting can be done as many judges need accommodation.

Chandrachud said – I am aware of my responsibilities
Chandrachud said that he is fully aware of his responsibilities. He clarified that he will leave the bungalow in a few days. He also said that earlier many former Chief Justices have also been given additional time in view of the circumstances. He has already shared this issue with the Supreme Court administration.

Question on the credibility of the Supreme Court
This matter is also in discussion because in the history of the Supreme Court, it has rarely been seen that the court has to ask the central government in writing to vacate its official residence. Usually in such cases, a solution is found internally. But in the current situation, the court had to take strict action, due to which this matter has come into headlines.
