World leaders congratulate Trump on his victory; Kamala Harris to deliver a speech in the evening, sources say
Former U.S. President and Republican Donald Trump made a comeback as he won a second term in office, defeating Vice-President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, to become the 47th President of the United States. Republicans took control of the Senate, increasing their tally to at least 52 of the chamber’s 100 seats.
Mr. Trump, 78, is only one of two Presidents elected to a non-consecutive second term, and he will also become the oldest President at the time of entry into office. The first was Grover Cleveland, who did two stints in the White House from 1885-1889 and 1893-1897. Grover Cleveland served as the 22nd president after the 1884 election, and as the 24th President after the campaign of 1892.
At the end of the day, exit polls showed that voters wanted a break with current circumstances, driven primarily by their concerns around inflation and the economy, as well as illegal migration — the focus of Mr. Trump’s campaign. The former President had promised to secure the border and said he would conduct mass deportations and impose heavy import tariffs to fund tax cuts.
Ms. Harris is about to concede defeat to Ms. Trump in her speech later in the evening, according to two sources. Having lost two crucial battlegrounds Sun Belt States — North Carolina and Georgia — Ms. Harris’s chances of winning were next to impossible after she lost Pennsylvania.
Donald Trump is elected the 47th president
Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday, an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.
With a win in Wisconsin, Trump cleared the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency.
The victory validates his bare-knuckle approach to politics. He attacked his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, in deeply personal — often misogynistic and racist — terms as he pushed an apocalyptic picture of a country overrun by violent migrants.
Trump claims victory over Harris
Donald Trump claimed victory and pledged to “heal” the country Wednesday (November 6, 2024) as results put him on the verge of beating Kamala Harris in a stunning White House comeback.
His exuberant speech came despite the fact that only Fox News had declared him the winner, with no other U.S. networks having made the call so far.
AP Race Call: Donald Trump wins Pennsylvania
Former President Donald Trump won Pennsylvania on Wednesday, defeating Democrat Kamala Harris in the critical battleground state. Both candidates campaigned vigorously in the state, visiting it more often than any other. Trump won Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral votes four years after Democrat Joe Biden carried the state, flipping it from Trump’s column in 2016 on his way to capturing the “blue wall.” No Democrat has won the White House without also winning Pennsylvania since 1948. The Associated Press declared Trump the winner at 2:24 a.m. EST.

S President Polls .

- November 06, 2024 19:32White House win gives Trump a legal reprieveDonald Trump’s election victory not only catapults him back to the White House but grants him a reprieve from looming court battles and soaring legal bills. As President, the 78-year-old Trump can make the federal criminal cases facing him vanish and see the state cases put on hold until he leaves the Oval Office four years from now.Mr. Trump pledged during the election campaign against Vice President Kamala Harris to fire Jack Smith, the special counsel who filed federal charges against him, “within two seconds” of taking office.A U.S. president does not have the authority to dismiss a special counsel, but Mr. Trump could — and almost certainly would — name a new attorney general who could do so.He could also simply order the Justice Department to drop the charges .Mr. Smith, who was appointed by Merrick Garland, President Joe Biden’s attorney general, brought two cases against Trump — for conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election and for mishandling top secret documents after leaving the White House.
- November 06, 2024 19:26Trump 2.0 may bring new opportunities; India better placed than China in trade with US: ExpertsDonald Trump’s Presidency of the United States will open new opportunities for India though certain sectors, especially pharma and IT, may face the heat if the incoming President decides to impose restrictions on imports and H1B visa regulations, experts said today.Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s friendly relationship with Mr. Trump will have a positive bearing on Indo-US relations but India may have to adapt its strategies to maintain cooperation in areas of mutual interest.Former Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said: “Trump’s presidency can be a new opportunity for India. Trump will impose tariffs and import restrictions on countries that he thinks are not friendly to the US, like China and even some European countries, and this can open markets for Indian exports”.Barclays, in a research report today, said trade policy is where Mr. Trump is likely to be “most consequential” for emerging Asia, which includes India and China.“We estimate Trump’s tariff proposals would subtract 2 per cent from China’s GDP – and greater pain on the more open economies in the rest of the region,” Barclays said. The more domestically oriented economies, including India, Indonesia and the Philippines, would be less vulnerable to higher tariffs, it added.Mr. Kumar said Mr. Trump will see India as a friendly country, and it can expect larger investments by US firms into India.- PTI
