Punjab Congress in-charge warns against indiscipline, says leadership decisions will be taken collectively; political observers decode the timing of his remarks

Chandigarh: Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel has triggered fresh political discussion after citing the expulsion of Navjot Kaur Sidhu while delivering a strong message on party discipline, prompting speculation over who within the Congress was being cautioned.

Addressing party workers, Baghel reiterated that indiscipline would not be tolerated and referred to the action taken against Navjot Kaur Sidhu as an example of the Congress leadership’s willingness to act against those violating party discipline.

“The Congress has always placed organisational discipline above individual ambitions. Those who violate party discipline cannot expect special treatment,” Baghel said.

Although he did not name any leader while making the remarks, political circles immediately began debating whether the message was intended for leaders who have recently made public statements at variance with the party line.

Leadership Decision Only After Elections

Baghel also sought to end speculation over the Congress’ chief ministerial face in Punjab, making it clear that no decision would be taken before the Assembly elections.

“The Chief Ministerial face will be decided only after the elections. At present, the party’s sole objective is to fight united and return to power,” he said.

His statement reinforces the Congress leadership’s strategy of avoiding internal leadership contests before the polls while projecting organisational unity.

Strong Message on Unity

The remarks come at a time when the Congress is attempting to strengthen its organisational structure in Punjab ahead of the Assembly elections.

Baghel stressed that every leader and worker must place the party’s interests above personal aspirations.

“Unity and discipline are essential if the Congress is to regain the confidence of the people,” he said.

Political Significance

The reference to Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s expulsion has attracted attention because it serves as a reminder that the Congress leadership is prepared to enforce disciplinary measures when necessary.

Whether the statement was directed at any specific leader remains a matter of political interpretation, as Baghel himself did not identify any individual during his address.

However, the timing of his remarks has added a new dimension to the political discourse within the Punjab Congress, where discussions over leadership and organisational unity continue ahead of the elections.
