Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has resigned from his post. Along with this, he has also left the post of top leader of his ruling Liberal Party. The party will now have to elect a new leader and Justin Trudeau will remain the Prime Minister of Canada until a new leader is elected.

Since Justin Trudeau’s resignation, various reactions are being seen in the local media of Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has resigned from his post. Along with this, he has also left the post of top leader of his ruling Liberal Party. The party will now have to elect a new leader and Justin Trudeau will remain the Prime Minister of Canada until a new leader is elected. For a long time, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was surrounded by internal fights in his own party. Canada’s deteriorating economy had also given an opportunity to Justin Trudeau’s opponents.

Recently, ministers of Justin Trudeau’s cabinet started resigning. Justin Trudeau got the biggest shock when his close aide in the government, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland also resigned. On Monday January 6, 2025 Justin Trudeau announced his resignation from the post of Prime Minister in a press conference. Different types of reactions are being seen in the local media of Canada regarding the speech he gave during this time. In this, many newspapers have also strongly criticized Trudeau on the foreign policy front and have cornered him for spoiling relations with India.

Trudeau spoiled relations with India and China during his tenure

In an article published in ‘The Globe and Mail’, Professor Turner Bal writes that Justin Trudeau has lost control of the government and its tradition. This happened because he did not want to accept that his government is heading towards defeat in the next elections. In the article, it was said about Justin Trudeau that whatever he said after coming to power, he could not fulfill it properly not only at the national level but also at the international level.

When Justin Trudeau came to power in 2015, he strongly criticized former Prime Minister Stephen Harper for not making a place in the UN Security Council, but he himself could not do anything in this matter. Opponents also termed Trudeau’s foreign policy regarding China as inexperienced. They said that Trudeau failed to understand the anti-Canada and aggressive foreign policy of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The newspaper wrote, “Trudeau’s official visit to India in 2018 was also in the news when he toured India for several days and was seen getting photographed with his family wearing Indian attire. The negligence that happened during this visit of Trudeau was described as shameful in the international media.” Trudeau has been supporting Khalistanis in Canada, over which the Indian government has been constantly expressing objection.

The article said that Canada’s relations with India and China have deteriorated continuously in the last few years during Trudeau’s tenure. A few years ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping was preparing to make a big deal with Canada, but after the arrest of a female officer of tech company Huawei in Canada, this deal could not happen.

Similarly, Canada also spoiled relations with India by accusing it of interference in internal matters. Relations with both the countries deteriorated so much that India and China have also recalled their diplomatic officials from the capital Ottawa.

He has resigned, but Trudeau probably still wants power

An article by political analyst Tasha Khairuddin has been published in Canada’s local newspaper ‘National Post’, in which she has raised questions on the speech given by Trudeau while resigning. Tasha says that Trudeau has resigned, but who knows, his intention behind this may be to remain in power in future as well.

Political analyst Tasha further writes that the way Justin Trudeau has given his speech and asked the governor to adjourn the parliament till March 24, it seems that he has given his party time to regroup and has trapped the opposition and the voters. Now there will be no chance of no-confidence vote and election for the next two and a half months. Tasha said that it is also possible that elections may be held in the future and Justin Trudeau remains in power.
Tasha further said in the article that Trudeau’s exit from power is not his fault but the fault of the party leaders, because Trudeau has completely blamed the party and others for his problems. The article further said that Trudeau described himself as a fighter in his speech and said that it has become clear that he will now have to fight internal battles. After this, in his speech, he blamed former Finance Minister Freeland and other parties.

By resigning, Justin Trudeau did what he wanted to do.

In an article published about Justin Trudeau in the local newspaper ‘The Star’, Ottawa based communication professional Craig Steinberg says, “His speech was not very great. But I think he did what he had to do. Obviously, he would not have wanted this decision, but I believe that it is his political cleverness that whoever his successor is, he did not really put any burden on him.”

Vice President of National Strategic Communications and Atlantic Canada David Tarrant said in the article that Trudeau is no longer a popular leader. There was no remorse or humility in Trudeau’s speech about any decision taken by him, due to which this crisis may have arisen. In his speech, he only wanted to tell that he is a fighter and how many great things he has done during his tenure.
