Nearly 95,000 households have already installed rooftop solar systems; State and Central subsidies can substantially reduce installation costs for eligible families

Key Highlights

  • Chhattisgarh has set a target of installing solar panels on five lakh homes by March 2027.
  • Around 95,000 households have so far been covered under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, according to the State government.
  • For a 1-kW system, the Centre provides ₹30,000 and the State ₹15,000 in subsidy.
  • A 3-kW installation can attract total subsidy of around ₹1.08 lakh, according to the information shared at the programme.
  • The State is targeting 4,000 MW of green-energy generation while encouraging greater use of solar power by households, agriculture and enterprises.

Raipur: Chhattisgarh plans to bring solar panels to five lakh households by March 2027, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said on Sunday August 23, 2026 , outlining an expansion of rooftop solar that could help families reduce dependence on conventional electricity while contributing to the State’s clean-energy transition.

Sai was addressing the concluding session of a two-day solar-energy programme at Pt Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium in Raipur, where he also visited stalls displaying solar panels, equipment and emerging technologies.

The Chief Minister said approximately 95,000 homes in Chhattisgarh have already installed rooftop solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with the government now seeking a substantial acceleration to reach the five-lakh target.

What Households Need to Know About Solar Subsidies

For families considering rooftop solar, one of the most relevant announcements concerns financial assistance.

Sai said a 1-kW solar installation is eligible for ₹30,000 assistance from the Central government and ₹15,000 from the Chhattisgarh government, taking the combined subsidy to ₹45,000.

For a 3-kW system, total subsidy support is around ₹1.08 lakh, he said.

In areas covered by District Mineral Foundation (DMF) provisions, arrangements have also been made for the differential subsidy amount to be supported through DMF funds, according to the State government.

These incentives are intended to make rooftop solar financially accessible to more households while allowing consumers to increasingly participate in decentralised electricity generation.

The Chief Minister said the State currently produces around 30,000 MW of electricity, while memoranda of understanding worth approximately ₹3.50 lakh crore in the energy sector could potentially create another 30,000 MW of generation capacity over time.

Separately, Chhattisgarh has set a target of 4,000 MW of green-energy generation, which the government sees as part of its contribution towards India’s longer-term clean-energy and net-zero objectives.

Sai said solar expansion should not be viewed only through the prism of electricity generation. The sector can also create employment and self-employment opportunities.

Women associated with self-help groups are increasingly entering the sector as solar vendors and participating in installation work at beneficiaries’ homes, he said.

According to figures cited by the Chief Minister, more than 30 lakh women are associated with 2.82 lakh self-help groups in Chhattisgarh, and the government wants emerging sectors such as renewable energy to create additional income opportunities for them.

Raipur MP Brijmohan Agrawal, who also addressed the programme, highlighted the potential for greater solar use in agriculture and irrigation. He said around 2.5 lakh irrigation pumps in Chhattisgarh have already been solar-powered, arguing that further expansion could reduce conventional energy expenditure while providing long-term benefits to farmers.

Sai later inspected solar technologies and equipment displayed at the venue and interacted with participants working in the renewable-energy sector.

The larger challenge will now be implementation. Moving from approximately 95,000 solar-equipped homes to five lakh by March 2027 requires adding more than four lakh household installations within a relatively short period.

For consumers, however, the immediate significance lies in the combination of government subsidy and the prospect of lower dependence on conventional grid electricity.

“It is our responsibility to preserve natural resources for future generations.” — Vishnu Deo Sai

As Chhattisgarh expands its conventional power capacity, its parallel solar push will determine how effectively the State can combine growing energy demand with a cleaner and increasingly decentralised electricity system.
