Himanta Biswa Sarma says the meeting to elect the BJP Legislature Party leader will be held in the presence of Union Minister J.P. Nadda, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini
Guwahati : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday May 6, 2026 submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, paving the way for the formation of the new government.
The Governor, accepting Sarma’s request to dissolve the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly, asked him to continue as the caretaker Chief Minister till the oath-taking ceremony.
After meeting the Governor, Sarma told journalists that the new Ministry would be sworn in after May 11, by when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Legislature Party leader would be elected.

On Tuesday May 5, 2026, the BJP Parliamentary Board appointed Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda as the central observer and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini as the co-observer for the election of the Assam BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) leader.
“The BJPLP meeting will be held in the presence of Nadda and Saini.
Following the election of the leader, we will hold an NDA (National Democratic Alliance) meeting for a proposal to support the BJPLP leader,” Sarma said.
He said that the BJPLP meeting would be held on or before May 11. “We will get to know the date from Nadda-ji’s office by today Thursday, May 7,” he added.

A State BJP spokesperson said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony.
The NDA swept the single-phase April 9 polls, winning 102 of the 126 seats. The BJP bagged 82 seats, two short of the two-thirds majority mark, while allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front won 10 seats each.
The remaining 24 seats were shared by Congress (19), its regional ally Raijor Dal (2), Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front (2), and All India Trinamool Congress (1).
