Kolkata Doctor Rape Case: Doctors may resume strike in Kolkata, will take decision after Supreme Court hearing

Kolkata: Junior doctors along with the public took out a torchlight procession at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital demanding justice for the rape and murder victim.

The agitation took place a day before a crucial Supreme Court hearing in the rape and murder case of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The matter will be heard in the Supreme Court today on Monday September 30 . During this time, the state government will respond on the issues of safety and security at the workplace. We can decide to start the strike again after seeing the response of the state government.

On September 27, a case of beating of three doctors and three nurses came to light after the death of a patient in Kolkata’s Sagar Dutta Hospital. Junior doctors are upset with this incident. They also protested in the hospital. Four protesting doctors have been arrested in this case.

At the Doctors’ Jusus programme, Dr Shreya Shaw of RG Kar College and Hospital said that our demands have been the same from the beginning. Our five demands have not been met yet. We thought our patients were in need, so the same happened at Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital. All our meetings with the government and the CM went in vain.

No security, no duty.”

We just want to say that there is no duty without security. We keep an eye on every decision of the Supreme Court and the pressure should be maintained. We hope that the CJI will give a just decision…. Justice should be delivered as soon as possible because justice delayed is equal to no justice.

Our movement has been focused on only one agenda so far, that is justice for Abhaya.” We met the Chief Secretary ten days ago regarding our security in hospitals, but the Chief Secretary did not take any action according to our demands. A similar incident happened in Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital. We will completely shut down if some suggestion is found in the Supreme Court hearing. On October 2, we will hold a massive demonstration.

The junior doctors returned to work on September 21 after striking for 42 days. They were made to march from the state health department headquarters to the CBI office in Salt Lake, a distance of about four kilometers.
