Let us make you aware of his struggles today…
When the notes and rhythm of the tabla were blown into his ears
Once tabla player Zakir Hussain had told that as soon as he was born, his father Allah Rakha had blown the notes and rhythm of the tabla into his ears. He had told Zakir’s mother that music is my sadhana and this note and rhythm is my prayer for my son. As he grew up, Zakir Hussain’s passion to become a tabla player was clearly visible and seeing his passion for the tabla, his father started his practice at the age of just seven
Zakir also learnt Saraswati and Ganesh Vandana
Zakir Hussain used to practice with his father from 3:00 am to 6:00 am, in which, along with sur, laya and taal, Zakir was also taught many shlokas and mantras. He was also taught Saraswati and Ganesh Vandana. On one hand, Zakir was working hard day and night to become a tabla player, on the other hand, his mother Baavi Begum did not want Zakir to play the tabla. She wanted to see Zakir become a doctor or an engineer. In such a situation, to keep Zakir away from the tabla, he was sent away to study during the last two years of school, but tabla and Zakir were made for each other.
Zakir could not work with Madhubala
When Zakir’s father Allah Rakha was composing music for the film ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, the film’s director K. Asif offered Zakir the role of Salim. Dilip Kumar also agreed to this, but Zakir’s father refused and said that acting would spoil his son’s mind. In such a situation, Zakir missed working with Madhubala. Even though he did not work with Madhubala in the film, later he tried his hand at acting as well. Zakir was not only an expert on the tabla, but he also composed music. Along with this, he also acted. He has also acted in documentaries like ‘Zakir and His Friends’, ‘Hit and Dust’, ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’. In the film ‘Saaz’, Zakir has not only composed music but also acted.
