The Supreme Court has denied the interim bail plea of Delhi riots accused Tahir Hussain, rejecting his request to campaign for Delhi elections. The bench gave a split verdict on Wednesday January 22 , 2025 .
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has given a split verdict on Tahir Hussain’s bail plea restricting his hope of campaigning. Justice Pankaj Mithal dismissed Hussain’s plea saying that no case was made out, whereas Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah said that Hussain could be released on interim bail.
Now, the matter would be placed before Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna for the constitution of a new bench of three judges to decide the issue.
Violence had hit the national capital’s northeast area on February 24, 2020, leaving 53 dead and several injured. Hussain is an accused in the riots case connected to the death of Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma.
The prosecution said that on February 26, 2020, complainant Ravinder Kumar informed the Dayalpur Police Station that his son Sharma had been missing since February 25, 2020. Sharma’s body was reportedly recovered from Khajuri Khas nullah in the riot-affected area.
His body had 51 injuries which led to the probe.
Tahir was previously in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and this year, he has been field by Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM from Delhi’s Mustafabad.
