Supreme Court: Owaisi reached the Supreme Court against the Waqf Amendment Bill, appealed to declare the bill unconstitutional

After the Wakf Amendment Bill was passed by the Parliament, the process of challenging it in the Supreme Court has started. It is reported that elected MPs from Hyderabad and Bihar have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this proposed law.

Lok Sabha MP Mohammad Javed, elected from Kishanganj Lok Sabha seat of Bihar, has challenged the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Supreme Court. After the bill was passed by both the houses of Parliament, MP Javed knocked the door of the country’s highest court and appealed to declare this bill unconstitutional. Apart from Javed, MP Asaduddin Owaisi, elected from Telangana’s capital Hyderabad, is also challenging this proposed law in the Supreme Court.

Vocal opposition in Lok Sabha too
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadus Muslimeen MP Owaisi had strongly opposed this bill during the nearly 12-hour long discussion on this bill in the Lok Sabha. Owaisi, while referring to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, had talked about symbolically tearing the copy of the bill in protest against this bill.

When were the bills passed by Parliament

It is worth noting that the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025 was passed by the Lok Sabha on April 3. After the discussion started on April 2, there was a discussion for about 12 hours. After voting on the bill and the amendments proposed in it late at night, this bill was passed by the Lok Sabha at 1.56 am. 288 votes were cast in its support, while 232 votes were cast against it.

The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha the next day, i.e. on April 4, 2025 Discussion on this bill began in the Rajya Sabha on April 3. At 2.32 am, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced the passage of the bill. This bill received the support of 128 MPs in the Rajya Sabha, while 95 votes were cast against it.
