Manipur Government: Amid the uproar in Manipur again, the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP) has withdrawn support from the BJP-led Manipur government. Writing a letter to BJP National President JP Nadda, the NPP has said that the Manipur government has failed to control the violence. In view of the current situation, the National People’s Party has decided to withdraw support from the Manipur government with immediate effect. In such a situation, the question is whether the N Biren Singh government is in danger? The answer is no. If we look at the results of the 2022 assembly elections, BJP won 32, Congress 5, JDU 6, Naga People’s Front 5 and Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party won 7 seats. Kuki People’s Alliance won 2, while 3 seats were won by independent candidates.
Still beyond majority
The majority figure in the 60-member Manipur Assembly is 31. BJP has 32 MLAs of its own. Shortly after the 2022 assembly elections, 5 out of 6 JDU MLAs formally joined the BJP. This increased the number of BJP members in the assembly to 37. In such a situation, the BJP government led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh has a majority on its own. The government will not be destabilized even after the withdrawal of support by 7 NPP MLAs.
Uproar after the murder of people of Meitei community
Let us inform you, the reason for the outbreak of violence once again is the recovery of the bodies of missing people from the Meitei community. Actually, after the violence of November 11, six people of a family went missing from Borobekra in Jiribam. These people were living in a relief camp after the violence broke out in June. The Meitei group alleges that they were abducted by armed Hmar people. They attacked the Borobekra police station on the morning of November 11. At that time, CRPF had killed 11 Kuki militants. After the encounter, the militants kidnapped 6 people from the relief camp. On November 15, the bodies of a woman and three children were found near the confluence of Jiri and Barak rivers on the Manipur-Assam border. This morning, the body of another kidnapped woman was found floating in the river.
Demand to arrest those responsible for the murder
This has angered the people of the Meitei community in the Imphal valley. They started a protest on November 16, 2024 They also gave an ultimatum to the government to arrest the militants responsible for the kidnapping and murder within 24 hours. The militants attacked the residences of MLAs and ministers in the Imphal valley. Not only this, they also tried to attack the residence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
