Officer sent to judicial custody; police continue hunt for lawyer accused in ₹1 crore insurance claim fraud
Raipur: Demonstrating its stated zero-tolerance approach towards corruption and abuse of authority, the Chhattisgarh government has acted swiftly in a serious case involving the alleged extortion of money from the family of a deceased police constable. Former Narayanpur Kotwali Station House Officer (SHO) Suresh Chandra Yadav has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody over allegations of illegally collecting ₹19 lakh from the family of a deceased District Reserve Guard (DSF) constable after the release of a ₹1 crore accident insurance claim on Sunday July 19, 2026 .
According to the police, the late DSF constable Dhaneshwar Nureti died in a road accident. Following his death, his wife received an accident insurance settlement of ₹1 crore under the State Bank of India’s salary package insurance scheme.
Investigators allege that Suresh Chandra Yadav, along with advocate Krishna Kumar Verma, demanded money from the bereaved family on the pretext of facilitating the insurance claim. The family reportedly paid ₹19 lakh to the accused.
The complaint further alleges that the accused later demanded 50 percent of the remaining insurance amount, threatening the family with legal cases, prolonged court proceedings, and harassment if they refused to comply. Unable to withstand the continued pressure and intimidation, the family approached the Narayanpur Superintendent of Police with a formal complaint.
Acting immediately on the complaint, police initiated an inquiry. Based on the preliminary findings, a criminal case was registered at Kotwali Police Station, Narayanpur, under Sections 318, 308, and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Following the registration of the case, Suresh Chandra Yadav was arrested and produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody. Police teams are continuing searches to apprehend co-accused advocate Krishna Kumar Verma, who remains absconding.
Officials stated that the investigation is progressing and further legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected.
The case is being viewed as a significant test of the state’s commitment to accountability within law enforcement. Authorities have reiterated that any public servant found abusing official authority, engaging in corruption, or exploiting citizens for personal gain will face strict legal consequences, irrespective of rank or position. The government has maintained that safeguarding public trust in the justice system remains a top priority.
